چکیده

We report on a timing analysis performed on a 62-ks long XMM-Newton observation of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658 during the latest X-ray outburst which started on September 21st 2008. By connecting the time of arrivals of the pulses observed during the XMM-Newton observation we derived the best fit orbital solution and a best fit value of the spin period for the 2008 outburst. Comparing these new set of orbital parameters, and in particular the value of the time of ascending node passage, with the orbital parameters derived for the previous four X-ray outbursts of SAX J1808.4–3658 observed by the PCA on board the RXTE, we find an updated value of the orbital period derivative, which results to be Ṗorb = (3.89 ± 0.15) × 10 −12 s/s. This new value of the orbital period derivative is in agreement with the value previously reported, demonstrating that the orbital period derivative in this source has remained stable over the last ten years. Although this timespan is not sufficient yet to confirm the secular evolution of the system, we again propose an explanation of this behavior in terms of a highly non-conservative mass transfer in this system, where the accreted mass (as derived from the X-ray luminosity during outbursts) accounts for a mere 1% of the mass lost by the companion.

I present a XMM-Newton observation of the accretion driven millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658 during its 2000 outburst. The source was conclusively detected, albeit at a level of only ∼ 2 × 10 erg s. The source spectrum could be fitted with a power-law model (with a photon index of ∼2.2), a neutron star atmosphere model (with a temperature of ∼0.2 keV), or with a combination of a thermal...

An Xmm-newton Study of the 401 Hz Accreting Pulsar Sax J1808.4–3658 in Quiescence

SAX J1808.4–3658 is a unique source being the first Low Mass X–ray Binary showing coherent pulsations at a spin period comparable to that of millisecond radio pulsars. Here we present an XMM-Newton observation of SAX J1808.4–3658 in quiescence, the first which assessed its quiescent luminosity and spectrum with good signal to noise. XMM-Newton did not reveal other sources in the vicinity of SAX...

SAXJ 1808 . 4 - 3658 : high resolution spectroscopy and decrease of pulsed fraction at low energies

XMM-Newton observed the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2008 outburst. We present timing and spectral analyses of this observation, in particular the first pulse profile study below 2 keV, and the high-resolution spectral analysis of this source during the outburst. Combined spectral and pulse profile analyses suggest the presence of a strong unpulsed source below 2 keV...

A Decade of Timing an Accretion-powered Millisecond Pulsar: the Continuing Spin down and Orbital Evolution of Sax J1808.4−3658

The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer has observed five outbursts from the transient 2.5 ms accretionpowered pulsar SAX J1808.4−3658 during 1998–2008. We present a pulse timing study of the most recent outburst and compare it with the previous timing solutions. The spin frequency of the source continues to decrease at a rate of (−5.5± 1.2)× 10 Hz s, which is consistent with the previously determined ...
